Jointing removes material to make a smooth, flat surface on one face, or one edge, of a board. It can be done with a hand plane or a power tool.
TERMINOLOGY
Main parts
cutting head – can have straight or helical blades
infeed table
outfeed table
fence
Three modes
surfacing – cut board face
jointing - cut board edge square to face
beveling – cut board edge at angle
PRE-RUN CHECKLIST
Determine best orientation for board
When jointing a face, if board is bowed along the face of the board, have the bow arcing down (like a frown, not a smile) so the board does not rock during cutting.
When jointing an edge, if board is bowed along the edge of the board, have the bow arcing down so the board does not rock during cutting.
Unplug machine.
Check that fence is squared to the outfeed table; adjust if necessary, taking care not to overtighten fence lock lever.
Check that infeed table is set no more than 1/16” above outfeed table, and that infeed table lever is securely locked.
Have push pads ready when surfacing; not needed when cutting edges of wide boards
Open blast gate. Close all other blast gates not in use.
Turn on dust collector.
Plug in machine.
POST-RUN CHECKLIST
Turn off machine.
Close blast gate.
Clean up sawdust on and around machine.
