Sewing 2: Seams & Stitching Techniques Class in Portland, Maine

Take your sewing to the next level by exploring a variety of seam types and finishes used in both garment and home sewing. You’ll practice techniques like French seams, flat-felled seams, and bias binding, and learn to sew curves and corners. We’ll also cover choosing appropriate fabrics and thread, pressing techniques, and troubleshooting common issues.

Basic sewing machine experience is required. Take Intro to Sewing at Factory 3 if you need an intro. All fabric will be provided. All tools will be provided, but you are also welcome to bring your own sewing gauge, ruler, thread cutters, fabric scissors, or chalk.

About the instructors:
Katie Rose Champlin is a Fashion & Textile designer from Portland, Maine. After earning a BFA from the Maine College of Art and Design, she refined her craft within an esteemed fashion design studio nestled in the heart of the NYC garment district. She returned to Maine in early 2024, where she was excited to reintegrate into the Portland art community. She challenges her practice by participating in competitions and shows including the BIAAF international design contest and Runway For Hope in Portland, ME. Katie specializes in apparel design, soft goods design, print design, mending, and upcycling.

Jillian Carrozza graduated from The Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC, as well as Central Saint Martins in London, UK, specializing in fashion design with knitwear. With a passion for textiles, she has worked in costuming, window displays, home décor, consulting and quality assurance. She is happy to bring her 25 years of sewing experience into teaching.
